Why Teeth Discolour
& Who Can Be Treated

Most tooth discolouration is extrinsic (surface staining) and responds well to professional whitening. Some causes are intrinsic and may require veneers instead — we assess this at consultation.

Tea, coffee & red wine

Chromogens (colour compounds) bind to tooth enamel over time, creating the most common form of surface staining — highly responsive to whitening.

Tobacco (smoking & chewing)

Nicotine and tar cause deep, persistent yellow-brown staining. Whitening can significantly improve these, though results vary with staining severity.

Age-related darkening

As enamel thins with age, more of the yellow dentine beneath shows through. Whitening brightens extrinsic staining and the enamel layer effectively.

Intrinsic staining (tetracycline, fluorosis)

Staining from antibiotics during tooth development or excess fluoride sits inside the tooth structure. These cases may need veneers — we assess at consultation.

A liquid gum barrier is applied and cured hard to protect your gums and soft tissue from the whitening gel throughout the session.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

Everything patients ask before their whitening session.

When performed by a dental professional using regulated concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, teeth whitening is completely safe for enamel. Studies consistently show no structural enamel damage from clinically applied whitening. We always assess for existing sensitivities before proceeding.
Temporary sensitivity is common for 24–48 hours post-whitening — a normal response as the enamel dehydrates slightly and rehydrates. We apply a fluoride desensitiser at the end of every session. Patients with pre-existing sensitivity can use desensitising toothpaste for a week beforehand.
Results typically last 1–2 years with normal diet and good oral hygiene. Patients who smoke or drink a lot of tea/coffee will see results fade faster. Take-home tray top-ups every 6–12 months maintain brightness easily and cost very little.
Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel — crowns, veneers, bonding, and fillings will not change colour. If you have visible restorations in front teeth, we'll advise whitening your natural teeth first and then replacing the restorations to match your new shade.
