Question 1

Can clear aligners really straighten teeth?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Clear aligners can gradually move teeth and can be effective for many appropriately selected cases. Their suitability depends on the movements required and the complexity of the case.

Question 2

How long does clear aligner treatment usually take?

Accepted Answer

Treatment may take around 6 months for some straightforward cases, while more complex treatment can take 12–18 months or longer. The actual duration depends on the individual treatment plan.

Question 3

How many hours a day should I wear clear aligners?

Accepted Answer

Many treatment systems commonly recommend approximately 20–22 hours per day. Follow the wearing schedule provided for your specific treatment.

Question 4

Can I eat while wearing clear aligners?

Accepted Answer

Aligners should generally be removed before eating. Plain water is generally suitable while wearing them.

Question 5

Can I drink tea or coffee while wearing clear aligners?

Accepted Answer

It is generally better to remove your aligners before drinking anything other than plain water. Hot beverages can affect the aligner material, while staining and sugar exposure can also be concerns.

Question 6

What is IPR in clear aligner treatment?

Accepted Answer

IPR, or interproximal reduction, is the controlled removal of a small amount of enamel between selected teeth to create space for planned tooth movement. It is only used when appropriate for the treatment plan.

Question 7

Are attachments always required?

Accepted Answer

No. Some patients may not need attachments, while others may need them to help achieve particular tooth movements.

Question 8

Will clear aligners hurt?

Accepted Answer

You may experience pressure or mild soreness, especially during the first few days after starting a new aligner. A temporary lisp or speech adjustment can also occur.

Question 9

What happens if my aligner stops fitting properly?

Accepted Answer

Do not simply move to another aligner or change your treatment schedule on your own. A poorly fitting aligner may need to be assessed to determine whether your teeth are tracking as planned.

Question 10

Will I need retainers after clear aligner treatment?

Accepted Answer

Yes, retention is an important part of maintaining the result. Long-term retainer use, often including night-time wear, may be recommended.

Question 11

Are clear aligners better than braces?

Accepted Answer

Neither is automatically better for everyone. Clear aligners can be effective for many selected cases, while braces may provide greater control for certain complex movements.

Question 12

Are clear aligners suitable for everyone?

Accepted Answer

No. The appropriate treatment depends on your teeth, bite, oral health, the movements required and the complexity of the case. A professional assessment is needed before deciding.
