6 Signs You Need
a Scaling Right Now

Tartar buildup is invisible to the naked eye in early stages. These warning signs mean bacteria have already started damaging your gum tissue.

Bleeding When Brushing

Blood on your toothbrush or floss is the most common early sign of gingivitis — inflamed gums caused by bacterial plaque buildup at the gum line.

Persistent Bad Breath

Halitosis that does not improve with brushing is caused by bacteria living in tartar deposits below the gum line — an area your brush cannot reach.

Swollen or Puffy Gums

Gums that appear red, swollen, or have pulled away from the teeth indicate active bacterial infection. Left untreated, this progresses to periodontitis.

Visible Brown or Black Deposits

Hard dark deposits at the base of teeth (especially on lower front teeth) are calculus — mineralised plaque that can only be removed with professional instruments.

Teeth Feel Loose or Shifted

Advanced tartar below the gum line destroys the bone and ligaments supporting teeth. Looseness is a late-stage warning that requires urgent deep scaling.

It Has Been Over 12 Months

Even without symptoms, annual scaling is essential. Tartar forms in 6–12 months regardless of how well you brush — professional removal is the only option.

The Procedure

What Happens During
a Scaling Session

The entire process takes 30–60 minutes and is completely painless with our ultrasonic scaler technology.

1

Oral Health Assessment

Your dentist examines your gums, checks pocket depths, and reviews any X-rays to determine if supragingival (above gum) or subgingival (below gum) scaling is needed.

2

Ultrasonic Scaling

A vibrating ultrasonic tip (Cavitron or similar) breaks up hardened tartar and calculus with high-frequency vibrations. A water stream flushes away debris simultaneously — gentle and highly effective.

3

Hand Scaling (Curettes)

Fine manual curette instruments refine areas the ultrasonic tip cannot reach — around the gum line margin and in tight interdental spaces.

4

Root Planing (if needed)

For deeper pockets (≥4 mm), root planing smooths the root surface to remove bacterial toxins embedded in the cementum, encouraging the gum to reattach.

5

Polishing

A rotating rubber cup with prophylactic paste buffs the enamel surface smooth, removing surface stains from coffee, tea, and tobacco while eliminating rough spots where plaque re-accumulates.

6

Fluoride Application & Review

A fluoride varnish strengthens enamel and reduces post-scaling sensitivity. We advise on technique, interdental cleaning, and schedule your next visit.

Why It Matters

More Than Clean Teeth —
Whole Body Health

Research consistently links oral bacteria to heart disease, diabetes complications, and preterm birth. A clean mouth is not cosmetic — it is systemic health care.

Prevents Gum Disease

Removes the bacterial load that causes gingivitis and periodontitis — the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35.

Fresher Breath

Eliminates the sulphur-producing bacteria in tartar deposits that cause persistent halitosis — immediate and lasting improvement.

Brighter Appearance

Surface stains from coffee, tea, and smoking are polished away, revealing the natural white enamel beneath. No bleaching required.

Saves Money Long-Term

One ₹1,200 scaling prevents ₹4,000–₹40,000 in fillings, root canals, or extractions caused by untreated gum disease and decay.

Reduces Cardiac Risk

Studies link periodontal bacteria (P. gingivalis) to arterial plaque and cardiovascular disease. Regular scaling is endorsed by cardiologists.

Improves Diabetic Control

Gum disease worsens blood sugar control. Clinical trials show that periodontal treatment reduces HbA1c by up to 0.4% in type-2 diabetics.

Your Scaling &
Cleaning FAQs

Basic scaling at Supreme Elite Clinic, Kelambakkam OMR starts from ₹1,200 for a full-mouth session. Advanced scaling with airflow polishing is ₹2,200 and deep cleaning (SRP) is ₹4,500 per quadrant. We offer transparent pricing with no hidden charges — you will be informed of the exact cost before treatment begins.
Routine scaling is pain-free for most patients. You may feel mild vibration and coolness from the water spray, but no sharp pain. Some patients experience sensitivity to cold air or liquids for 24–72 hours after — especially if significant tartar was removed from around sensitive root surfaces. This resolves quickly. We apply fluoride varnish at the end of every session to minimise this.
No. This is one of the most persistent myths in dentistry. Ultrasonic scalers remove only tartar (calcified bacterial deposits) — they do not affect enamel. Teeth may feel "smaller" or gaps may seem wider immediately after scaling because the tartar was filling those spaces, but this is a normal, healthy result. Enamel is harder than the tartar being removed.
For most patients, every 6 months. Patients with active gum disease, heavy smokers, diabetics, and those prone to rapid tartar buildup may need a 3-month interval. Patients with naturally low tartar formation and excellent home hygiene may be fine at 12 months. Your dentist will advise the ideal recall interval after examining your gum health.
After a basic scaling, you can eat and drink normally within 30 minutes (after the fluoride varnish sets). Avoid very hot or very cold food and drinks for the rest of the day if you feel sensitivity. After deep cleaning (SRP) with local anaesthesia, wait until the numbness wears off (2–3 hours) before eating to avoid accidentally biting your cheek. Soft foods are recommended for 24 hours after SRP.
If bad breath is caused by gum disease or tartar buildup, scaling provides significant and lasting improvement. However, halitosis can also come from the back of the tongue, tonsils, dry mouth, or systemic conditions. We assess the source during your consultation and address it appropriately. Maintaining good home hygiene (brushing, flossing, tongue cleaning) after scaling is essential to keep breath fresh.
